Tour of Kootwijk and Kootwijkerzand

The Kootwijkerzand is an unexpected desert-like sand plain of about 700 hectares where plants grow to full maturity under harsh conditions. Along the pastures, the horizon seems to be miles away. Take a walk to the Kootwijkerzand Lookout Tower to get a good idea of the vastness of this area! After a visit to the village of Kootwijk, you will pass the site where Radio Kootwijk is located. The transmitter station was built in the 1920s for radio telegraphic contact with the then Dutch East Indies. The imposing building, which is a cross between a temple and a sphinx, contrasts beautifully with the empty, wild surroundings. The former transmitter station is now a monument because of its special art deco style.
