Description

The central subjects of this route are the fortified city of Groenlo and the Korenburgerveen/Vragenderveen nature reserve near Lichtenvoorde. The fortified town of Groenlo reflects the history of the siege by Frederik Hendrik in 1627. He forced the Spaniards in the city to surrender. In Groenlo you can still admire the ramparts and canals as a defensive structure. By 2025, it is hoped that the old Callixtus church will have been converted into a National Museum of the 80 Years' War.

After no. 41 towards no. 99 you follow De Slinge. It is a lowland stream that originates behind Winterswijk. Between Lochem and Borculo it flows into De Berkel. Rapids and waterfalls can still be seen in the stream. Along the way you will come near junction 27, at the Erve Kots museum farm. Here you can admire the history of Achterhoek farm life from the past in the open air and in the buildings. Here you will also find the Weenink cheese farm. Experience, taste and see how cheese is prepared.

At 28. is the nature reserve"Koolmansdijk\\\". It is located on the edge of the East Dutch Plateau. After 2011, fields were cleared, creating a piece of a primeval Dutch landscape. There is a non-water permeable layer in the subsurface. The groundwater is pushed up as seepage water. This means that it is always wet and boggy, making it unsuitable for farmers. The walking path here is also called"The Boot Path\\\". There is special vegetation, such as the Orchid, the Great Rattler and Parnassia.

At 31 you could take a short excursion off the route to nearby Zieuwent. Here is the Cathedral of the Achterhoek\\\", the Werenfridus Church. It is a neo-Gothic church from 1899. The architect was Boerbooms, a student of the famous architect Pierre Cuypers. Behind the church is a beautiful park suitable for a small pause.

Further along the way, you can enjoy lunch or a drink with something to eat in the center of Lichtenvoorde in the beautifully renovated Restaurant Markt 5. When the weather is nice, the sunny terrace here is highly recommended.

Then you cycle to Questionnder, with its special mill. The landscape here is somewhat undulating, as part of the Achterhoek plateau. At junctions 13, 6 and 5 you will always see Het Tussender Veen to your left. It used to belong to dozens of farmers from Questionnder who used to grow peat there. The Tussende, Korenburger and Meddose Veen together form one of the most important raised bog areas in the Netherlands. They can only be viewed with a guide by appointment. Measures have been taken to protect the area against dehydration, for example by constructing a sheet pile wall. There is special flora and fauna, for example orchids, sundew and spagnum.
