Description
In the vicinity of Hardinxveld-Giessendam you cycle through vast polders with meadows that are separated from each other by ditches and other waterways. The open landscape is interspersed here and there with an old farm or a small village. In this quiet area you can clear your head.
Small villages in the polders
Hardinxveld-Giessendam is the starting point of the route. From here you cycle through small towns such as Giesenburg, Goudriaan and Molensgraaf. Along the way you cycle past the Westermolen and the Achterlandse Molen. The Westermolen is a seesaw mill from 1652. Until 1974, this mill drained the Polder Langerak together with the Oostermolen and the Broekmolen. The Broekmolen was lost during the Second World War and the Oostermolen was replaced in 1939 by a diesel pumping station. The Westermolen is therefore the only remaining mill on this polder. Nowadays the mill is only used in case of flooding. You can visit the mill when the blades of the mill are turning.

You will find three seesaw mills along the water of the Ammersche Boezem. On this route you will pass the Achterlandse Molen. It is unknown when exactly this mill was built, but in any case the mill was already there in 1596. Until 1969, this mill drained Polder Liesveld. Nowadays the mill serves as a residence and the mill also runs on a voluntary basis.
