Description
In the area around Hardinxveld-Giessendam you cycle through extensive polders with meadows that are separated by ditches and other waterways. The open landscape alternates here and there with an old farm or a small village. You can clear your head in this quiet area.
Small villages in the polders
Hardinxveld-Giessendam is the starting point of the route. From here you cycle through small towns such as Giesenburg, Goudriaan and Molensgraaf. Along the way you cycle past the Westermolen and the Achterlandse Molen. The Westermolen is a seesaw mill from 1652. Until 1974, this mill drained the Polder Langerak together with the Oostermolen and the Broekmolen. The Broekmolen was lost during the Second World War and the Oostermolen was replaced by a diesel pumping station in 1939. The Westermolen is therefore the only remaining mill on this polder. Nowadays the mill is only switched on in case of flooding. You can visit the mill when the sails of the mill are turning.

You will find three seesaw mills along the water of the Ammersche Boezem. On this route you will pass the Achterlandse Molen. It is unknown exactly when this mill was built, but it was certainly already there in 1596. This mill drained Polder Liesveld until 1969. Nowadays the mill serves as a home and the mill runs on a voluntary basis.
