Tour of the primeval forest of Bekendelle

Your route starts at Vriezenhuis Estate. This authentic scholten farm is characteristic of the Winterswijk National Landscape. The scholte was the Saxon version of the sheriff and was also responsible for maintaining the landscape. Privileges allowed such a farm to grow into a powerful estate. Today you walk through the Woold nature reserve'De Baekendelle\\\', or Bekendelle. This old deciduous forest extends around the Boven-Slinge stream. You will see alder, ash and oak. On the way back you will pass Berenschot\\\'s Watermolen, a beautiful spot on the Slingebeek. The mill dates from 1652 and has been completely restored. When the water in the stream is at the right level, the water wheel is turned on. A nice place to sit on a terrace before walking back!
