Amsterdam, North Holland, The Netherlands
Cycling route: 4528278
Provided by: Amsterdammer
Start by taking the free ferry from Central Station to IJplein. Note that this ferry has its own jetty a bit removed from the other ferries. After a few minutes of uninteresting cycle paths you will reach Nieuwendammerdijk, a beautiful brick street with cute small houses, many with gables or wooden fronts. Cross over to Schellingwouderdijk, equally cute. You will pass close by Landmarkt organic supermarket (stock up on some snacks?), it also has a cafe at the back. But instead you can continue following the route through Durgerdam which has a nicer cafe with a terrace in the lake as well. Durgerdam is basically a long street with picturesque houses on one side and the lake with boats on the other side. Then some countryside where you may see sheep, cows, swans, geese, other birds before you reach picturesque Ransdorp with its colorful wooden houses and draw bridge, and blunt church tower. On through some more countryside to Zunderdorp, yet another picturesque village. All these towns are still officially part of Amsterdam, but feel like separate villages. Instead of going back the same way you can cross two bridges into eastern Amsterdam. If you want you can stray from the route and have a look in popular Javastraat full of shops and cafes, be careful cycling here between aggressive and clumsy car drivers. Or make your way immediately to windmill De Gooyer with beer brewery Brouwerij't IJ cafe and terrace underneath it. At the end the route also takes you through another village-like street with big houseboats called Dijksgracht. You may want to have some last drinks at Mediamatic or at Hannekes Boom, both cafes with terraces by the water.
Below you will find various suggestions for breaks that you can visit during your route. These are divided into different categories, making it easy for you to choose.
