Tour of Maasheggen and Vortumse and Groeningsche Bergen

Your route starts at Camping & Guesthouse De Brembroeken. The Groeninge and Vortumse Bergen is a narrow belt of river dunes on the Maas. A beautiful small-scale landscape of scrubland and sparse grasslands where you can find badger setts. Thousands of years ago, the Maas flowed on the other side of the dunes and the west wind blew the sand high here. You also walk through the Maasheggen, the oldest farming landscape in the Netherlands and a UNESCO Biosphere Area. Here you will see numerous hedges that have become densely fused together. Ideal for keeping livestock in place. There is a lot of hawthorn growing there, which blooms beautifully in the spring. The densely interwoven hedges gave the Romans major headaches, as they could not advance here as en masse as they were used to!
