Tour of castles near Gulpen

Your route starts at Kloostertuin Wittem, at the Redemptorist Monastery from 1733. Nearby you will immediately discover Wittem Castle. This used to be a large and important castle between Aachen and Maastricht. Of course, it was not without skirmishes and the fortress was regularly attacked. You can walk via cozy Gulpen to Presseux, or Wylre Castle. There was already a castle on the moated grounds around 1040, but the current mansion was built around 1652. You will now find a beautiful museum of modern art, Buitenplaats Wylre, with many works outside in the garden. In Wijlre you will also find the Brandbrouwerij, the oldest brewery in the Netherlands. In Cartils you see some square hooves. You walk back via an unpaved path, through the meadows.
