Your route starts at Herberg't Hengeveld. The Dutch iron industry emerged along the Oude IJssel at the end of the seventeenth century. Here, iron ore was extracted a few meters underground and used as a raw material in local iron foundries, such as DRU. The route also takes you through the forests of Slangenburg Castle. In Gaanderen, Josias Olmius built the first Dutch blast furnace, an iron mill, at the end of the seventeenth century. He produced bombs, hand grenades and bullets, among other things. You will also discover the Varsseveld cups. These small cover sand hills, varying from one to five meters in height, were created during the last ice age. The Varsseveldse kopps are a beautiful remnant of the historic eastern Dutch camp landscape.
