Your route starts at Het Erf Terras Herberg't Hengeveld. The Dutch iron industry originated along the Oude IJssel at the end of the seventeenth century. Iron ore was extracted here a few metres underground and used as a raw material in local iron foundries, such as DRU. The route also takes you through the forests of Slangenburg Castle. In Gaanderen, Josias Olmius built the first Dutch blast furnace, an iron mill, at the end of the seventeenth century. He produced bombs, hand grenades and bullets, among other things. You will also discover the Varsseveldse kopjes. These small cover sand hills, varying from one to five metres high, were formed during the last ice age. The Varsseveldse kopjes are a beautiful remnant of the historic East Dutch camp landscape.
