Previous route was
448246. We park the car at the beginning of the Grindweg in Woensdrecht (Junction 39) and drive onto the Sophiaweg before Völckerdorp. Now the Damespolder is on the left and the Völckerpolder on the right. The Damespolder was drained in 1884 on behalf of two wealthy Van der Duijn sisters. Völcker wanted to imitate this and also built his own village, with a school and church. The church has been demolished and the school is now a barn. Still fun to take a look! A little further we cross the bridge of the Scheldt-Rhine Canal. Excavated in 1976 at the insistence of the Belgians for a connection between the Scheldt and the Rhine. In the north the canal is closed by a lock.
At the Westerscheldedijk you can cycle in front of or behind the dike, depending on the wind. We chose to be able to look over the water of the Western Scheldt. At the Nauw van Bath you can see the large container ships sailing close to the side, because here the depth is probably the greatest. A beautiful sight. Don't forget to take a look at the village across the dike. There used to be a fort there.
We drive to the village of Waarde on an excellent cycle path and beautiful views. There are beautiful salt marshes here, which are not always flooded by water. Sometimes the remains of the drowned village of Valkenisse (1530) are also visible in the mud. At the bottom of the dike in Waarde we have a refreshment at"Het Spulletje\\\", the only cafe that was open.
We drive to Rilland via Oostdijk and Krabbedijke. It is striking that so much fruit grows in South Beveland. Everywhere you see large plots of apple and pear trees, fenced with tall trees or shrubs to protect against the wind. At junction 77 we cross the Scheldt-Rhine Canal bridge again and continue cycling to an intersection, where we can cycle back to the canal. We drive under the bridge again to Völkerdorp in the middle of the polder and almost invisible. Soon we are back on the Grindweg to Woensdrecht.
