Your walk starts at Herberg Het Onland. In the Achterhoek you walk through a mosaic of grasslands and arable lands, streams and forests. It is wonderfully peaceful to travel for miles here. After a while you arrive at Landgoed Slangenburg. The castle of the same name dates from 1612, its predecessor was built in 1354. After the Second World War, Benedictine monks moved into the St. Willibrordus Abbey, which they built themselves. Herberg Het Onland is also part of the estate. The name 'Onland' refers to the most swampy and unusable piece of land that could be found on the Slangenburg estate. 'Ancestor' Gerrit Hendrik Nijenhuis founded a farm and inn on that spot around 1790. The inn has been run by members of the Nijenhuis family for more than 225 years.
