Experience the silence in Kempen-Broek

Unknown doesn't necessarily mean unloved. Especially not if you want a leisurely day of cycling. In Grenspark Kempen-Broek, the cycle paths are still quiet. It's strange, really, once you've experienced how beautiful this area is.

Kempen-Broek
Kempen-Broek Border Park is located roughly between Weert and Maaseik. This cross-border nature reserve features a series of diverse landscapes where you can enjoy many beautiful kilometers. For example, you'll drive through the Laurabossen, a typical example of former logging forests. In this former heathland and drifting sands, you'll experience a wonderfully refreshing tranquility amidst the many conifers. In both the Netherlands and Belgium, you'll also cycle along the green banks of the Zuid-Willemsvaart, a canal dating from 1826 that runs from Maastricht to 's-Hertogenbosch.

Belgian nature
In Belgium, you'll drive through Goort, a marshy woodland. A little further on, you'll pass through Hasselterbroek, a nature reserve with a mix of meadows, small woods, and heathlands. Just like on the Dutch side of the border, this part of Limburg is remarkably peaceful. And beautiful. The route ends in the heart of the Stramprooise Heide nature reserve. Nestled among the woods, you can enjoy a drink and a delicious meal at the charming Nieuw Vosseven Natuurlijk Plaats.

Treasures of Stramproy
Stramproy is the only large village on your route. In and around this village, you'll pass several old mills, such as the Broekmolen (Broek Mill) from 1738. This undershot watermill is located on the Aanbeek stream, which flows along the Dutch-Belgian border. De Nijverheid is a corn mill dating from 1903 in Stramproy. A little further on is the Sint-Jansmolen (Sint-Jans Mill), a corn mill dating from 1783. The small church on the village square is also a beautiful sight. The marlstone tower of this St. Willibrord Church dates back to the sixteenth century.
