A tour along the Maas

On the border of Limburg and North Brabant you can cycle quietly along both banks of the Maas. You will find small-scale nature reserves and of course you have beautiful views over the Maas from the saddle.

Castle Well
Along the Maas you will find charming villages with a rich cultural history. In Well you will pass the Mariakapel van Geijsselberg, built in 1660, on the Grotestraat. A little further on is Well Castle, which originally dates from the fourteenth century. In Bergen you cycle past the Old Tower, the ruins of a Romanesque church tower from the thirteenth century. Like many churches in this region, this tower was also severely damaged during the Second World War.

Centuries-old Maasheggen
After you have crossed the Maas, you will see some more Maash hedges. These hawthorns and blackthorns have been grown together by humans and form an impenetrable hedge. This braiding already existed in Roman times: Julius Caesar described his annoyance about it, it took him a lot of effort to pass these green walls with his army. At Smakt you will see the Sint-Jozefkapel from 1699. During this route you can take a break at Jaykes for a cup of coffee and something tasty.
