Vincent van Gogh, one of the world's most celebrated artists, was born and raised in Zundert in 1853, a true Brabant native. While his love for nature and the Brabant countryside was deeply ingrained, he also felt the pull of the vibrant dynamism of the big city. Discover the 49 km Van Gogh cycling route, which takes you past Van Gogh's most important sites in and around Nuenen. This route passes the Van Gogh Village Museum, the Van Gogh Church where Vincent's father was a minister, and the house of the potato eaters.
Vincent van Gogh lived and worked in Nuenen from December 1883 to November 1885. His stay in Nuenen is considered one of the most important and productive periods of his life. He devoted himself to producing 194 paintings in Nuenen, including "The Potato Eaters," 313 drawings, 25 watercolors, and 19 letter sketches.
Moreover, Nuenen itself and its surroundings form a collection in itself. No fewer than 23 buildings and landscapes have a direct connection to Vincent's two-year stay in Nuenen. Of these 23 objects, 14 were painted or drawn by him, one or more times. The Van Gogh cycle route passes by this living collection.
"And the Brabant that people have dreamed of, reality sometimes comes very close..."
Letter 446, Nuenen, May 15, 1884.
