Border walk to Straelen

Your route starts at Jagersrust. Here you are in the middle of the Maasduinen National Park, a terraced landscape on an elongated, high sandy ridge between the Maas and the German border. It consists of lower and higher sandy soils, the Maas valley and a plateau. After a cup of coffee, put on your walking shoes to see how close the German border actually is. Before you know it, you'll be walking into Germany, where you'll discover the Peter and Paul Church in Straelen. The Roman Catholic Church has remained Catholic, despite the conquest of Straelen in 1632 by the Dutch and Protestant stadtholder Frederik Hendrik. This son of William of Orange allowed the Catholic inhabitants of his conquered areas to continue to propagate their faith. You walk back along the Schandelose Heide.
