Your route starts at Jagersrust. In the surrounding area, you can enjoy cycling through the various nature reserves that together form the Maasduinen National Park. The Louisenburg Lock is a monument to the Grand Canal du Nord, a major project by Napoleon. This shipping link between the Meuse and Rhine was intended to bypass the Dutch seaports, but after Napoleon controlled it, the canal was no longer needed. Work stopped in 1811. The German Nette Valley is part of the Maas-Schwalm-Nette border park. The Krickenbecker Seen are four lakes created by peat extraction around Krickenbeck Castle, in the valley of the Nette River. This nature reserve is one of the oldest and largest in North Rhine-Westphalia. Be sure to stop in the charming old town of Venlo to explore the renovated Maasboulevard. Back at your starting point, you can relax with a snack and a drink.
