Hessischer Radfernweg R2

The first section runs parallel to the Lahntalradweg, which branches south from the R2 at Cölbe. Suitable for the family outing is the route from Biedenkopf to Cölbe, which passes through the upper Lahn valley and is surrounded by low mountain heights. On the densely populated route to Buchenau there are villages with beautiful half-timbered farms. Then follows a quiet stretch of road, suitable for a picnic on the banks of the Lahn with secluded areas under trees and water splash for the little ones. This section is almost flat and flat asphalted.

The R2 cycle path offers an interesting mix of nature experiences and historic urban architecture. Not directly on the route, but worth the detour is the university town of Marburg with the Landgrafen Castle, which towers high above the fairytale old town. Particularly worth seeing is the small town of Amöneburg, about 16 km from Marburg. The mountain on which Amöneburg is located and protrudes from the Ohmebene is a basalt peak formed millions of years ago. From there you have a fantastic view of the Marburger Land.

The route continues via Kirchhain and Neustadt in the valley from Schwalm to Alsfeld. In the Kirchhain area, cyclists can expect cool lakes on hot days. Just after Stadtallendorf you cycle through the Herrenwald to Neustadt. It attracts visitors to the Junker Hansen Tower, Europe's largest trade fair. In Alsfeld, the historic old town is a sensation. You will continue to Lauterbacher Strolch and soon you will be able to see the City Palace, with its Orangerie, the Fasanerie of Fulda and of course the Cathedral. At the end of the route you reach the state border of Bavaria via climbs in the Spessart. Only at the end is it really uphill: the Spessart challenges with somewhat longer and difficult climbs.
