City walk Willemstad | Southern Waterline

Willemstad is one of the eleven fortified cities of the Zuiderwaterlinie. The fortified city has the shape of a seven-pointed star and is surrounded by five forts, of which Fort Sabina is the most impressive. The strategically located Defence Line of Willemstad was an excellent place to control shipping between Holland, Zeeland and Antwerp throughout the centuries. Walk along the Volkerak and the beautiful Swan Lake, the monumental Mauritshuis, the Holy Virgin Mary Church and then along the Koepelkerk. Finally, you walk outside the ramparts over the canal, so you get a different view of the ramparts.

This walking route was created by VisitBrabant Routebureau. The route was set out using the Brabant walking junction system. At each junction, you will also find a sign for the Zuiderwaterlinie.
