Description

Your route starts at Het Groene Geschenk. After a cup of coffee you walk to the Barger Trekgat, a pingo ruin from the last ice age, 75,000-10,000 years ago. A little further north you will discover another pingo: the Sultan Lake. Pingo\\\'s were formed when Scandinavian land ice reached the Netherlands during the Ice Age. Freezing and thawing created ice mounds or pingos. The term pingo comes from Inuktitut, the language of the Eskimos. Eventually the ice thawed and formed a small lake, in which organic material became peat-rich. Later, this peat was extracted by humans to burn as peat. This made the round shape visible again. The name Berghuizen did not come out of the blue: it owes its name to the slopes in the landscape.
