Description

From your starting point, first cycle to Krabbendijke for a cup of coffee at De Meiboom! Then you cycle through the Zeeland polder to the forests of the Brabantse Wal. You will clearly see (and feel!) the difference in height. The steep edge forms the sudden transition between the high-lying Brabant sandy soils on the east side and the low-lying marine clay area of the Scheldt in the west. It is so special that it has been declared a geological monument. The Brabantse Wal has been formed by all kinds of developments: erosion by the river, dune formation by polar winds and deposits of river clay. The steep edge itself was created by the erosion of the Scheldt. The route takes you down the steep edge and back up, via Woensdrecht, Ossendrecht and the bird paradise of the Markiezaatsmeer - one of the largest wetlands in the Netherlands.
