Description

Your route starts at't Strunerke. From here you cycle to Gerkesklooster, named after the Premonstratensian monastery that was founded around 1240 by Gerke Harkema from Augustinusga. The high cemetery belongs to the former monastery, just like the church. The monastery was dissolved in 1580 and the buildings were demolished, but the 16th-century brewhouse was converted into a church in 1629. Further on you drive through Visvliet, a picturesque village. Here you will see the beautiful medieval village church and the thatched Hilmahuister mill from 1868. Stop at the Westendorp model mill, a scale model of De Eendracht in Sebaldeburen. The model mill really works: it transforms a former meadow into a swamp area! The Antonius Church in Surhuizum originally dates from the thirteenth century, its spire is reminiscent of the Juffertorens in Groningen.
