Description

You leave from B&B and Camping Lentemaheerd. You cycle to the port of Delfzijl via small villages such as Oosteinde and Bierum. Few people know that Delfzijl was once a fortified city. In the bustling harbor you can still see some remains of this, such as the monumental Grote Waterpoort from 1833. The lockable gate is still part of the sea wall that protects Delfzijl against high water. Cycling along the banks of the meandering Damsterdiep you will see some beautiful old buildings. Biessum and Uitwierde are two characteristic mound villages whose mounds are approximately 2000 years old. You drive back via Paapstil, named after the'til\\\', the bridge where a Catholic, a papist, lived during the Reformation. Get off on the bridge, you have a beautiful view over the water!
