Description

You'll depart from B&B and Camping Lentemaheerd. Cycle through small villages like Oosteinde and Bierum to the harbor of Delfzijl. Few people know that Delfzijl was once a fortified town. In the bustling harbor, you'll still see some remnants of this, such as the monumental Grote Waterpoort (Great Water Gate) from 1833. This lockable gate is still part of the seawall that protects Delfzijl from high tide. Cycling along the banks of the meandering Damsterdiep canal, you'll see several beautiful old buildings. Biessum and Uitwierde are two characteristic villages built on terps, whose terps are approximately 2,000 years old. You'll cycle back via Paapstil, named after the 'til', the small bridge where a Catholic priest lived during the Reformation. Take a break on the bridge for a beautiful view of the water!
