Description

Your route starts at B&B Bij de Rode Beuken. From here you cycle to Hackfort Castle, which also includes the Hackfort watermill. This undershot water mill dates from 1700. The Baakse Beek has been restored so that the mill can grind grain again. The mill is even in use as a hydroelectric power station. Hackfort Castle is the highlight here. Two sturdy towers characterize the castle. The fortress was originally a residential tower that was largely destroyed by Spanish troops during the Eighty Years' War. The castle was rebuilt in 1598 and underwent major renovations in 1788. It is in good condition and in the middle of beautiful forests and vast meadows. On the way back you will discover Kieftskamp Castle. It was named after the lapwing, which used to be common here.
