From Maastricht you cycle through the unique landscape that makes South Limburg the most striking part of the Netherlands. It is praised for its green rolling hills, vast plateaus, wonderful half-timbered farms, the blossoming orchards and typical sunken roads. Nowhere else in the Netherlands will you find a more varied mosaic of landscape elements than here.
In many places in South Limburg, there are underground marl quarries. Because people have been sawing the building blocks from the quarry for centuries, enormous tunnel systems have been created over time that can reach a surface of up to 100 hectares. The Gemeentegrot Valkenburg, in fact a quarry because it was dug by human hands, is worth a visit!
