From Maastricht you cycle through the unique landscape that makes South Limburg the most striking part of the Netherlands. It is famous for its green rolling hills, vast plateaus, wonderful half-timbered farms, flowering orchards and typical sunken roads. Nowhere else in the Netherlands will you find a more varied mosaic of landscape elements than here.
There are underground marl quarries in many places in South Limburg. Because people have been sawing the building blocks from the quarry for centuries, enormous tunnel systems have been created over time that can reach an area of up to 100 hectares. The Valkenburg Municipal Cave, in fact a quarry because it was dug by human hands, is worth a visit!
