Description

Your route starts at Camping De La Rue Koffie & Zo. Via the lovely fortified town of Werkendam you take a beautiful trip to De Biesbosch, one of the few freshwater areas in the world where there is an ebb and flow. The sixteenth-century city walls in the city center of Gorinchem are well preserved. The Dalempoort dates from 1597. Fort Vuren was built in 1844 as a simple, earthen fort. In the nineteenth century it was built with a tower that was only accessible via a drawbridge. Highlight of the route is Loevestein Castle. This fortress is located in a strategic location, where the Maas and the Waal continue together as the Boven-Merwede. It became famous overnight when Hugo Grotius escaped from the correctional center in a book chest in 1619!
