Bergen op Zoom and the Markiezaatsmeer via Scheidreef Hoogerheide

This route takes you along the largest wetland in Brabant: the Markiezaatsmeer. You also drive through Bergen op Zoom, a city full of cultural history.

Prison Gate

The route starts at Fletcher Hotel-Restaurant Stadspark, a car park near the beautifully landscaped city park. Look into the Pot and you will see in Bergen op Zoom, among other things, the fourteenth-century Gevangenpoort, the oldest building in the city.

Wetland

Then we cycle to the Molenplaat. Originally this was a drying place in the Oosterschelde, now it is an overgrown nature reserve. From the quay you then look out over the Markiezaatsmeer. After the IJsselmeer and the Wadden Sea this is the largest wetland in the Netherlands. Many birds live on the water, about 125 species breed there annually.

Higher Heath

We drive through the center of Hoogerheide, at Het Raedthuys you can get off for a drink and a bite to eat. Then we go past the cemetery at the Scheidreef and the entrance to Woensdrecht Airport.

Mattemburgh

We continue our way and pass the Mattemburgh estate. Many pine trees grow here, although you can also see oaks and birches. Further on you can visit the De Kraaijenberg visitor centre to learn more about the Markiezaatsmeer. From the quay you have a beautiful view over the Binnenschelde, after which you return to the car park at Fletcher Hotel-Restaurant Stadspark.
