City walk through the fortified town of Steenwijk

The canals and city walls date from the time of the Eighty Years' War. During that period it was located in a strategic location, which meant that there were regular battles for Steenwijk. The cityscape of Steenwijk is determined by the 87 meter high Sint Clemenstoren. The fifteenth-century tower is the oldest existing structure in Steenwijk. There was already a wooden church building on the site of the Grote Kerk around 900. Later a stone church was built.
