Description
This route takes you through the historic city of Medemblik and small villages in the area. Get to know these charming towns, stroll through the old alleys and let history come to life while admiring centuries-old houses.
Picturesque Opperdoes
The starting point of this walk is in the middle of Medemblik. From here you can walk a bit through the center of the town past Radboud Castle. Then you walk along the coast of the IJsselmeer to the village of Onderdijk. This village arose in the Middle Ages between the inland lake De Groote Vliet and the IJsselmeer. The walk then takes you further to the village of Opperdoes. This village is also called Klein-Giethoorn, because, just like in Giethoorn, you will find many bridges here that lead you over waterways to houses and farms. As you walk through this village you can enjoy this picturesque appearance.
The Bakery Museum
The last part of the route takes you through Medemblik again. You end your tour at the Bakery Museum. Here you can buy the tastiest bakery products such as bread and delicious filled cakes, but you can also learn to bake bread and cookies or make tasty creations with chocolate and marzipan.
Radboud Castle
Radboud Castle dates from the year 1288. The castle was built on behalf of Floris V as protection against the Frisians. The castle used to be much larger than it is now. Nowadays only two residential wings, a square tower and a round tower, remain standing. After 1578, the castle was no longer used as a defense structure, because city walls were constructed in Medemblik.
