Sint-Michielsgestel, North Brabant, The Netherlands
Cycling route: 4363507
Provided by: Marcel, Noord-Brabant
On this route you cycle past not one, but no fewer than three castles in the Brabantse Meijerij.
The route starts in Sint-Michielsgestel and quickly takes you to Nieuw-Herlaer Castle (junction 36). This castle was built in the 14th century. Some old parts are still visible, but most of it was restored in the 19th century. You then pass the Haanwijk Estate, already inhabited in Roman times.
The most famous castle on the route is Heeswijk Castle. This castle was built in 1038 and is the symbol of Brabant pride. The current state dates from 1835. The route also passes the Berne Abbey, the oldest and still existing monastic community in the Netherlands.
