This route takes you past several Frisian lakes that you will find in the southwest of Friesland. The landscape consists of extensive peat areas with plenty of water. In summer this area is popular among water sports enthusiasts, but the peaceful landscape is also perfect for a nice bike ride.
Frisian lakes and nature reserves
The shore of the Slotermeer is the starting point of your trip. From here you cycle through small towns in the direction of the Tjeukemeer, the largest inland lake in all of Friesland. The shape and total surface area of this lake has changed over the centuries due to storm surges and advancing ice. So the lake becomes bigger little by little. Then you cycle along the IJsselmeer in the direction of the esdorp Oudemirdum and Oudega. A little further on you cycle through the Elfbergen forest area, north of Oudemirdum. This forest area full of conifers and deciduous trees was created in the 19th century. From here you cycle back to the starting point of the route via Ruigahuizen.
Fortified town of Sloten
A stone's throw from the campsite you will find the fortified town of Sloten with a protected cityscape. The old moat, the ramparts and the stronghold are well preserved and the corn mill, the bastions, the gates and the monumental merchant houses also breathe the atmosphere of the past. Around the canal you will find numerous cozy terraces where you can sit along the water.
