From Ouwsterhaule to Heerenveen and back

Explore the Oranjewoud
The starting point of this cycling route is in the woods just outside Sint Nicolaasga. From here, you cycle through the polders to Scharsterbrug, Rotserhaule, and then Heerenveen. You cycle along the edge of Heerenveen into the Oranjewoud forest. This woodland area consists of several former estates, beautifully landscaped parks, a few remaining country houses, and small meadows nestled among the woods. Cycle along winding paths and listen to the birdsong before cycling back into Heerenveen. A little further on, you cycle past Lake Nannewijd, a lake created by peat excavation. This lake is frequently used by water sports enthusiasts, but you can also enjoy wonderful cycling in the surrounding area.

Mills in the polder
On this route, you'll cycle past two windmills. The first mill you'll admire along the way is the Skarrenmoune. This mill was built in 1888 on the edge of Scharsterbrug and has served as both a polder mill and a corn mill. The mill still operates regularly with the help of a volunteer miller. A little further along the route, you'll pass the De Hersteller windmill near Rotsterhaule. This mill, built here in 1857, is one of the six that once drained the St. Johannesgaster Veenpolder.
