Enjoy the peace and quiet of the Frisian peat polders or immerse yourself in the coziness of Frisian towns? Both are possible on this route along the Sneekermeer!
Mills
The bank on the east side of the Langweerderwielen lake is the starting point of this route. From here you set course for the Vlecke Joure. A Vlecke is the old name for a place without city rights that is too large to be a village. All kinds of monuments remind us of Joure's rich craft history. Then you cycle along the Sneekermeer to Akkrum. You will pass the Mellemolen, a polder mill from 1849, and the Deelsmolen from 1859.
Sneekermeer
The Sneekermeer was created in the Middle Ages through the extraction of peat. The lake consists of one large lake and three smaller lakes that flow into each other. All around you will find beautiful nature reserves with wide polders, which are popular in spring with breeding birds such as black-tailed godwits, lapwings and yellow wagtails. In the colder months you will mainly find wigeons and geese here.
