From Joure along the Sneekermeer

Enjoy the peace and space of the Frisian peat polders or immerse yourself in the cosiness of Frisian towns? Both are possible on this route along the Sneekermeer!

Mills
The bank on the east side of the Langweerderwielers lake is the starting point of this route. From here you set course for the Vlecke Joure. A Vlecke is the old name for a place without city rights that is too big to be a village. All kinds of monuments remind of the rich craft past of Joure. You then cycle along the Sneekermeer to Akkrum. You will pass the Mellemolen, a polder mill from 1849, and the Deelsmolen from 1859.

Sneeker lake
The Sneekermeer was created in the Middle Ages by the reclamation of peat. The lake consists of one large lake and three smaller lakes that flow into each other. All around you will find beautiful nature reserves with wide polders, which are popular in spring with breeding birds such as black-tailed godwit, lapwing and yellow wagtail. In the colder months you will mainly find widgeons and geese here.
