The more than 6100 ha. The large Drents-Friese Wold National Park consists of a forest and heathland area of special landscape value.
Between Diever, Vledder, Appelscha and Smilde there was an area that is now wooded, but in the mid-19th century it consisted of extensive heathland. The role of the Society of Benevolence, founded in 1313, was decisive for the design of the landscape around Doldersum. The aim was to give underprivileged and impoverished people from the cities a better life by retraining them to become farmers.
