Route from Parrega to Allingawier, Experience Village. www.aldfaerserf.nl A beautiful cycling trip towards and along the coast of the old Zuiderzee. Before the Afsluitdijk came, the water here was salty and the population lived from fishing and trade. The Marneslenk also entered the country on this stretch, much of its history can be found around Pingjum; old dikes and a rich cultural history. You cycle along the coast to Harlingen, a port city on the Wadden Sea. The ferry to Terschelling and Vlieland departs from here. In this city you can find: galleries, shops, restaurants. In the Hannemahuis you will find more about the history and culture of the city. The route goes through Harlingen to Kimswerd, the village of Grote Pier. Grote Pier lived here around the year 1500. Soldiers of the Black Band set fire to his farm, killing his wife and son. Pier became angry and took care of an army himself, with which he eventually won a sea battle and Grote Pier is still known in Friesland. Pingjum was located on the Marneslenk, a large estuary that entered the country from the Zuiderzee. There has always been a battle against the sea water. The Pingjumer Halsband was built around Pingjum, a dike against the seawater. Pingjum is a terp village, raised on old salt marsh walls. Via small villages such as Wons, Schraard and Schettens, you arrive in Bolsward. Get off your bike in those small villages and talk to the locals, they will probably have a fascinating historical story to tell you. Wons was previously the'capital\\\' of Wonseradeel, part of
-now- Municipality of Sudwest Fryslân. During the Second World War, Wons had the Wonsstelling, the last line of defense before the Germans could reach the Afsluitdijk. You can find more about this in the Kazemattenmuseum in Kornwerderzand. Via the villages you will reach the city of Bolsward. Bolsward used to be closed between the Marneslenk and the large Middelzee that entered the province from the north. Later the land was poldered and, what used to be water, is now rich clay soil. Bolsward is also one of the Frisian Eleven Cities, has a beautiful city center and knows the museums: Titus Brandsma, Oudheidskamer, Gysbert Japicx. The Gysbert Japicxhuis is also the Tourist Information Point of the city. The town hall is also well worth a visit. In July and August you can take an afternoon cruise through the canals of the city. Bolsward had many breweries. The Sonnema Berenburg is still being made there and you can take a look at the Frisian beer brewery. In short, a small town with a rich culture. Continue on the cycle path and return to Dedgum via Tjerkwerd. Tjerkwerd is known for the colony of Meerbats in the church. The village has a tea garden and a beautiful Gallery of Ada Stel. When you are back in Dedgum, you can relax there, views and farmlands. Oh yes, have you seen garden it Swiete Libben in Dedgum??? Pssst, immediately left over the bridge. Have fun cycling!!! @ Holiday Southwest Friesland
