Holten is a village on the edge of De Sallandse Heuvelrug National Park. Explore the hilly, green surroundings of Holten on foot and finally stroll through the cozy village. Everything in one route.Heathlands and forestsFrom Holten you can walk straight into the green foothills of the Sallandse Heuvelrug. On this route you will get to know the Holterberg north of the village of Holten. In this area you will mainly find many heaths that are interspersed here and there with coniferous and deciduous forests. The Holterberg is one of the few areas where black grouse still occurs. You used to find this bird a lot in the Netherlands and Belgium, but nowadays the black grouse is threatened with extinction. Keep your eyes peeled and you might spot this unusual bird while walking.Grand Café De BiesterYou walk back to Holten via the other side of the Holterberg. Here you will find Grand Café De Biester next to the old station building in Holten. This is the ideal location for a break after hiking. Drink a cup of coffee or go for lunch or dinner. When you are fully rested, you can continue on route 409928 in this area.Canadian cemeteryThe Holten Canadian War Cemetery is located on the Holterberg. This is one of the largest military cemeteries in the Netherlands for soldiers who died during the Second World War. 1394 soldiers are buried here, of which 1355 Canadians. The cemetery is located on the Wullenberg, the southern part of the Holterberg. You will find an information center next to the cemetery.
