Get out and about and get to know the Witte Veen, a nature reserve near Buurse on the border with Germany. This area is known for its varied landscape with heaths, grassland, ponds, forests and raised moors. You will also find border markers, smugglers' trails and other remnants from the past.Old smugglers' trailsThe starting point of this walk is just across the German border. From here you immediately set course for the Dutch border and then you walk into the nature of the Witte Veen. This area used to be popular with smugglers who could smuggle their stuff across the border undetected. Control officers ran their surveillance here from the Markslag farm, but they were by no means able to stop all smugglers. Nowadays the borders between the Netherlands and Germany are open, but you can still find traces here that take you back to the time when this was not the case. Consider, for example, border markers from before 1795. Nature conservationAt the end of the route you will reach the Haarmühle. At this old watermill you will find a former barn that has been transformed into a cozy restaurant. Settle down here for a tasty snack and a drink while you rest after your tour. Enjoy!Bird watchingDo you like birds? Then you can take a break along the way at the bird viewing screen on Gervingshoekweg.
