Description
South of Zwolle you will find numerous small villages along the IJssel. This route takes you to the floodplains of the IJssel and over the water with ferries. Along the way you can get acquainted with Overijssel life in all the villages you cycle through.
Cycling through the Duursche Waarden
The starting point of this route is in the hamlet of Fortmond. This hamlet is located in De Duursche Waarden, a nature reserve of 120 hectares. In this area you cycle through forests and along marshes and estuaries in the floodplains of the IJssel. River clay used to be extracted here for the production of bricks. Much nature along the IJssel has disappeared due to the construction of dikes, but since 1989 nature in the Duursche Waarden has been protected and maintained. From Fortmond you cross the IJssel to Veessen. You then cycle on to Heerde and at Wapenveld you cross the IJssel again to Wijhe.
Birds in the Buitenwaarden
Near Wijhe you cycle a bit along the IJssel through the Buitenwaarden nature reserve. This reserve is one of the most bird-rich areas along the IJssel. In the spring, the marshy meadows in this area are very attractive to all kinds of birds, such as the shoveler and black-tailed godwit. In winter, pochards and wigeons can be found. If you like bird watching, you've come to the right place.
