Description
Polders are typically Dutch and cannot be ignored in the Dutch landscape. During this walking tour you will get to know the polders of Schalkwijk, which were reclaimed in the 12th century. These polders lie between Houten and the banks of the Lek.
Vast landscapes
The starting point of this route is in Schalkwijk. This ribbon village was created in 1130 when the area was reclaimed. Schalkwijk is located along the Schalkwijkse Wetering, which is intended for the reclamation and drainage of the two polders in the area. From Schalkwijk you can walk straight into the polders. Enjoy the tranquility and the views in this vast landscape. Part of the route takes you along the floodplains of the Lek. This river of 62 kilometers long is a continuation of the Lower Rhine. On the outskirts of Schalkwijk you will pass the place where Schalkwijk Castle used to be. It is not clear what exactly happened to the castle. The only thing that is certain is that the castle was no longer there in 1811.
Fort Werk on the Groeneweg
Fort Werk aan de Groeneweg is located on the banks of the Lek. Take some time to look around this fort as you walk past it. You will find small concrete casemates used by riflemen and pyramid-shaped bunkers that were intended as group shelters. The fort was part of the New Dutch Waterline. There are beautiful standard fruit trees in the vicinity of the fort.
