Description
Do you like water and nature reserves? Then you really should try this route in the area around Utrecht. During this tour you cycle along the banks of the Lek, but also over the Utrechtse Heuvelrug and through the nice towns in the area.
From Culemborg to the Utrechtse Heuvelrug
Schalkwijk is the starting point for this route. From here you cycle to the banks of the Lek to cross the river to Culemborg. Culemborg was originally a trading village, but in 1318 the town was granted city rights. A city wall and a moat soon followed. The city wall has been partly preserved and you will also find several castles from times long past in this area. Take your time to admire Culemborg and then continue your trip in the direction of the Utrechtse Heuvelrug. This national park is located on a high sandy ridge and you will find forests, heathlands and sand drifts. A beautiful area to cycle through.
Mill De Hoop
Near Rijswijk you will find Molen De Hoop on the banks of the Lek. This windmill was built in the first half of the 18th century as a replacement for an older mill. The mill has been restored several times. In 2003 the mill was renovated for the last time and since then the mill has been kept in operation on a voluntary basis. The mill can be visited by appointment.
