Description
Do you like water and nature reserves? Then you should really try this route in the Utrecht area. During this tour you cycle along the banks of the Lek, but also over the Utrechtse Heuvelrug and through the nice towns in the area.
From Culemborg to the Utrechtse Heuvelrug
Schalkwijk is the base of this route. From here you cycle to the banks of the Lek to cross the river to Culemborg. Culemborg was originally a trading village, but in 1318 the town was given city rights. A city wall and a moat soon followed. The city wall has partly been preserved and you will also find several castles from times gone by in this area. Take the time to admire Culemborg and then continue your trip in the direction of the Utrechtse Heuvelrug. This national park is located on a high sand ridge and you will find forests, heathlands and sand drifts. A beautiful area to cycle through.
Mill De Hoop
Near Rijswijk you will find Molen De Hoop on the banks of the Lek. This windmill was built in the first half of the 18th century as a replacement for an older mill. The mill has been restored several times. In 2003 the mill was renovated for the last time and since then the mill has been kept in operation on a voluntary basis. The mill can be visited by appointment.
