Zeeuws-Vlaanderen is a beautiful area that borders Belgium and is cut off from the rest of the Netherlands by the Western Scheldt. The landscape of Zeeuws-Vlaanderen consists of open meadows with polders and here and there a meandering creek. Explore this area by bike and take a trip to Belgium.
Cycling from the Netherlands to Belgium
The city of Axel is the starting point of this route. From here you cycle through the polders in the direction of the fortified town of Hulst. This city is sometimes called the 'most Flemish city' in the Netherlands, because it has a Burgundian lifestyle. Enjoy the cozy atmosphere in the city and view the many historical monuments that can be found here, such as the town hall and the city walls with a moat around them. A little further on you cross the Belgian border to Stekene. You cycle through the De Stropers nature reserve. This area consists of quiet coniferous and deciduous forests.
The Stropersbos
The Stropersbos is located in the De Stropers nature reserve. Only a small part of the original forest has been preserved. Only the part around the former Voorhoute castle is still as it used to be. Most of the trees were lost during the advance of the Spaniards when they tried to conquer areas here. This forest used to be private property, but now it is maintained by the government.
