Baron van Spaenwalk

Billion Castle
The starting point of this route is right in front of the stone bridge of Kasteel Biljoen. From here the route is signposted with posts marked'Walking route Baron van Spaen\\\'. Note: Some plates are missing. Use our route map to easily follow the route. The castle was built by order of the duke Karel van Gelre. In 1662 the house and estate came into the hands of the noble Van Spaen family. Then the castle got its current shape through a renovation and Johan Frederik Willem van Spaen devoted himself to the construction of a beautiful garden and a park. This is how the estates that you can admire during this walk were created.

Lush gardens
Van Spaen was one of the first Dutchmen to apply the landscape style in his garden. Tightly landscaped geometric gardens gave way to lush landscapes with a large pond, a waterfall and a magnificent view of the mountains. Van Spaen had signs placed with lines of poetry by classical and modern poets, but those signs have not stood the test of time. There was already vandalism in the 17th and 18th centuries.

Important information
It is not allowed to park on the roads or in the verges along the roads of the Billion estate. So park your car outside this estate and explore Billion on foot. This way the estate remains an oasis of peace for walkers. It's no problem if you bring your dogs to this estate, but make sure your dog is on a lead.
