Fancy a day of walking in an area where you will find almost no habitation? Then walk this route on and around the Herikerberg near Markelo in Twente.
Herikerberg
The Herikerberg is a hill of almost 47 meters high. From the top, but also from the flanks you sometimes have beautiful views over the Twente coulisse landscape and the surrounding villages. The route leads you through a beautiful mosaic of sometimes centuries-old forests, meadows and fields. You can walk here at your leisure and occasionally take a bench for a break or picnic. Or to enjoy the silence for a while.
Burial mounds
While walking in this area you will see a monumental, former watchtower from 1890. It was built by order of Count Bentinck, the then resident of the Weldam castle located kilometers away. The tower now houses a home and studio. There are also several prehistoric burial mounds in this nature reserve.
