Enjoy Roerdalen

In the Roerdalen region of Limburg, a lovely rolling landscape awaits you with quiet nature reserves, surprising historic villages and beautiful views over the Maasplassen.

Centuries-old basilica
Just past Montfort you drive through the coniferous forests of't Sweeltje. Here in 2009, an amateur archaeologist discovered a real Roman treasure of no less than 65 silver and 6 gold coins. In Sint-Odiliënberg you will pass a striking basilica. The building, dating from the twelfth century, stands on a church hill on the Roer. The current basilica still partly consists of its centuries-old predecessor. Enjoy the beautiful view of the surroundings here.

Maasplassen
The route takes you along the Maasplassen, the largest contiguous water sports area in the Netherlands. You can admire many luxurious pleasure boats here, for example in the Herten marina. On the edge of Linne is the sixteenth-century St. Martin's Church. Here you look out over the Linnerweerd, one of the few natural floodplains of the Maas.

Limburg country houses
You can make a few trips around Sint-Odiliënberg to take a look at a country house. Just past the Reutje you can drive to Aerwinkel, a small castle that was built in 1854 by the famous Limburg architect Pierre Cuypers. Get off and walk to the pond via walking route 38. From a bench you can enjoy a beautiful view of the castle and the croaking frogs in the pond behind you. Frymerson Castle (located just before junction 75) was also designed by Cuypers, the country estate dates from 1860. Overen Castle is a mansion from the eighteenth century, the adjacent farm dates from the seventeenth century.
