Enjoying the Utrechtse Vecht

Along the Utrechtse Vecht you can enjoy the beautiful nature and beautiful country houses. In the surrounding polders it is wonderfully quiet cycling through the special landscape around Kockengen.

Land of Cockaigne
Kockengen is an old reclamation village that takes its name from Cocagne, the French name for Cockaigne. Around the village you can see the so-called cope landscape with its characteristic narrow plots: a parceling pattern that originated in the thirteenth century. You have beautiful views over the wide polder here. The Kockengense Molen dates from 1675. Until the sixties it drained the Kockengense polder.

The Hair
There is no shortage of historical buildings on this route. For example, you will pass Kasteel de Haar, the largest castle in the Netherlands. The castle originally dates from the fourteenth century, the current castle was rebuilt in neo-Gothic style in 1892. On the meandering Vecht you will see several beautiful historical country houses. You will also look out over the picturesque Loosdrechtse Plassen.

Zuylen Castle
Crazy about old castles? Then brighten up your route with a visit to Slot Zuylen. The history of this castle goes back to the thirteenth century with the construction of a keep. In 1422 the castle was razed to the ground, and it was not until a century later that reconstruction began. Nowadays you can admire the living culture of the Utrecht nobility from the thirteenth century in the castle. And view the beautiful castle gardens.
