Description

From the Wellsche Hut you can walk straight into the Maasduinen. These river dunes were created at the end of the last ice age, when the Rhine and Meuse left behind large amounts of sand and clay. During dry periods, the west wind blew up the river sand into drifting dunes. The dunes are now covered with forest to protect the surrounding fields and meadows from drifting sand. You also walk across the Bergerheide. With a bit of luck you will spot the flock of sheep grazing the heath. Further on you will pass the Reindersmeer. This lake was created by gravel extraction. Here you have a beautiful view over the rippled water, while you walk a little higher up over the drifting sand. It is wonderfully quiet here. Ideal to clear your head and relax.
