From the Wellsche Hut you can walk straight into the Maasduinen. These river dunes were formed at the end of the last ice age, when the Rhine and Maas left behind large quantities of sand and clay. During dry periods, the westerly wind blew the river sand into drifting dunes. The dunes are now covered with forest to protect the surrounding fields and pastures from drifting sand. You also walk across the Bergerheide. With a bit of luck, you will spot the flock of sheep grazing the heath. Further on you will pass the Reindersmeer. This lake was created by gravel extraction. Here you have a beautiful view over the rippled water, while you walk a little higher up over the drifting sand. It is wonderfully quiet here. Ideal to clear your head and relax.
Below you will find various suggestions for breaks that you can visit during your route. These are divided into different categories, making it easy for you to choose.
