Dunes in Limburg? Yes, you will find them in the Maasduinen National Park. An ideal nature reserve to explore on foot, so that you can enjoy nature and tranquility to the fullest.
Wellsche Heide
The Maasduinen were created at the end of the last ice age, when the Rhine and Maas left behind large amounts of sand and clay. In dry periods, the westerly wind blew up the river sand into shifting dunes. Nowadays, the dunes are almost all covered with forest, such as on the Wellsche Heide. Oaks and birches stretch to the sky here, a little lower the mountain ash adorns your route. In the Rode Hoek northwest of Wellerlooi you can enjoy fresh-smelling conifers.
The Hammer estate
Landgoed de Hamert is also part of the Maasduinen. You walk through heaths and forests that are grazed by Galloways, sheep and goats. West of Wellerlooi, you can walk out of the woods for a view of the rippling Maaswater.
