This route mainly takes you along Dutch water. You cycle along the Nieuwkoopse Plassen, the Langeraarse Plassen, De Kromme Mijdrecht and the Amstel.
Green Jonker
The Nieuwkoopse Plassen are one of the last extensive low peat areas in the Netherlands. A little further on you drive past the equally rugged new nature reserve De Groene Jonker, where you can spot birds such as black-winged stilts, lapwings and spoonbills with binoculars. From the towpath along the Amstel you can enjoy sweeping views and the typical Dutch high skies. You will pass the Langeraarse Plassen, an area of peat lakes that were created in the sixteenth century by peat extraction.
Old mills
In Aarlanderveen is De Morgenster, a former flour mill from 1870. A little further away is the only still operating mill in the world. You will pass Mill 4 of this mill corridor, a polder mill dating from 1801. Along the river De Meije you can see the almost sixty meter high white water tower from 1932 from a distance. This iconic national monument is also popularly called Pietje Potlood.
