De Ronde Venen, Utrecht, The Netherlands
Cycling route: 4155440
Provided by: Justin
This special cycle route tells the story of three water lines: the Old Dutch Waterline (1672-1815), the New Dutch Waterline (1815-1951) and the Defense Line of Amsterdam (1881-1940). By inundating land up to knee height from Muiden to the Biesbosch and around Amsterdam, the west could be protected. After the Second World War, the water lines lost their function, but the strategic landscape, the water management system and the military works were largely preserved. Still as impressive as in times gone by. The Defense Line of Amsterdam has been a World Heritage Site since 1996 and the New Dutch Waterline has been nominated to be added to this list.
