There is an Overijssel legend of a giant, Eric, who sets out with a large bag of sand to fill in the Zuiderzee. The bag punctures and the giant loses all the sand in the Salland. This is how De Sallandse Heuvelrug is said to have come into being. The Sallandse Heuvelrug is beautiful at any time of the year, but especially at the end of August when the heather is in bloom.
Did you know that this is even one of the largest dry heathlands in Europe? The cycle route not only takes you over the heath, but via the hills you also cycle through forests and landscapes with beautiful views. From the viewpoint on the Holterberg you have a beautiful view of the nature reserve. Enjoy the space and openness in Sallandse Heuvelrug National Park, can you hear the silence?
