Maritime Vlissingen
This route runs from the centre of Vlissingen to the boulevard along the Westerschelde. The boulevard is one of the attractions of this city. You will find many cosy terraces here to sit down. Enjoy a drink and the view at the same time, isn't that wonderful? On the boulevard you will also find the Gevangentoren (Prison Tower), which used to be part of the old city gates of Vlissingen. Furthermore, you will come across references to Michiel de Ruyter everywhere in the city. This naval hero was born in Vlissingen and lived there for a long time. There is a statue of Michiel on the Keizersbolwerk (Emperor's Bolsheviks) and part of the boulevard, the marina and a square in Vlissingen are named after him.
The history of Vlissingen
Due to its strategic location, Vlissingen has been in the hands of various countries throughout the centuries. In the 1920s, an airport was built in Vlissingen to stimulate tourism and the ports were enlarged. Furthermore, Vlissingen was promoted as a seaside resort and for that purpose a beach and a walking pier were built. During the Second World War, that pier had to be demolished again.
