Monnickendam is easy to explore on foot. With this route you can stroll through the historic center and get a breath of fresh air on the Gouwzee.
Gouwzee
From the starting point you first walk a bit along the Waterlandse Zeedijk, a water barrier that dates back to the Middle Ages. Get a breath of fresh air, while looking out over the rippling water of the Gouwzee. Further on you walk past De Poel, a small lake that was created by a dike breach. You will also pass through the Groene Hart, a nice city park with some pristine water and reeds.
Waag
After the Middle Ages, Monnickendam enjoyed a flourishing trade with the Baltic Sea countries for a while. The town owes its current wealth of historic buildings to it. Here you will see many centuries-old bell, stepped and gabled facades. Look to the left before you walk onto the harbour. You will see the beautiful Waag there. At the Zuideinde you will see the eighteenth-century Lutheran Church.
